The ChallengesRemote control of cash registers“Via one of our telecom partners we received a question from the main office of a confection retail chain”, says Thomas Vliegen about the ZyWALL-project. “They asked if we could come over to talk about the way they daily gathered the information from cash-registers in their stores. They supposed it be done in a better way, the big question was: how ? At that time the chain had 21 stores spread around the Netherlands. All stores were equipped with their own cash-register with built-in modem. All of them were connected to a telephone-line and were called from the head office at night to download the necessary data. The growth of the chain over the past years – by now over 30 stores – increased the Telephone costs significantly. Also the modems disconnected every once in a while as well which made it necessary to start the procedure again, which added extra Phone costs…” Customer profileSissy-Boy was founded in 1982 when Michael Smit (1957) opened his First store in Zaandam. Nowadays stores are established throughout the Netherlands. A number of stores sell the Sissy-Boy Homeland collection and all sell the Sissy-Boy fashion. Sissy-Boy is an independent, successful, Dutch retail chain specialized in “special basics”. Why ZyXEL won this projectInternet communication“With ZyXEL products in mind, we proposed to install a VPN (Virtual Private network).connecting the cash registers in all stores via a fast ADSL-internet connection to the central computer at Headquarters. The big question, when sending sensitive information like Sales-figures and cash records over the internet, is ‘How to keep it save? ‘. Second to that the solution couldn’t be too expensive.” Wireless UMTS-connection“An extra challenge were two shops where the provider couldn’t deliver an ADSL-line on short notice”, says Vliegen. “By setting up a 3G-connection (UMTS) we solved this issue. ZyXEL’s ZyWALL 2WG can handle this. Via UMTS head quarters can log in with the cash-registers of these stores now jus as easily as with the other stores. Besides the whole procedure runs a lot faster now, since the connections are much faster compared to the analogue modems.” Affordable solution“When you buy another brands gateway, don’t be surprised if you pay double the price”, Vliegen comments on the Financial aspect. “And that while ZyXELs equipment is absolute top looking at speed and reliability. Besides they are easy to install. We installed a couple ZyWALLs ourselves to see how it went. We found it to bes o easy that After the First couple we just handed the ZyWALLs to our telecom partner who connects them at the stores. We preconfigured the gateways, which makes installing them a piece of cake. This means relative little working hours for installation, which in its turn limits installation costs again. New stores and locations can be added to the system very easy, so the solution really suits the expansion plans of the retail chain perfectly.”Product overzicht
